Breaking Barriers to Early Education with TK Classrooms
Children who attend high-quality preschool start their education journey with a clear advantage. These students are more likely to excel in honors courses and less likely to fall behind or even drop out.
With so many proven benefits, why aren’t more families enrolling their children in transitional kindergarten programs?
While 90% of families with small children want to enroll their children in programs like transitional kindergartens yet only 65% of them knew TK was available.
Awareness is even lower among low-income families, just 64% compared to 81% in higher-income households.
This highlights the need to expand programs where families need them most.
In California. The distribution of TK programs shows the disparity clearly. San Francisco, one of the state's highest-income areas, has more than 35 TK programs. Imperial County covers nearly 100 times more land but has just 20.
This income disparity contributes to the uneven availability of TK programs across the state.
Every child should have the opportunity to attend transitional kindergarten, regardless of where they live.
Schools often struggle to offer TK programs due to higher costs, particularly because classrooms require their own bathrooms for young students.
Young TK students often need extra restroom support, which is difficult when bathrooms are shared with older students. Classroom bathrooms allow four-year-olds to learn independence while keeping teachers focused on educating the rest of the class rather than constant restroom trips.
In November, schools received $10 billion in funding, but much of it is tied up addressing existing facility needs, leaving TK programs without support.
That’s where NextMod comes in, we are working to ensure every parent has access to high-quality transitional kindergarten.
